Im slowly learning how to use CMD and navigate it. Iv just learnt how to use the ping command to check a connection to a domain, but is there anything else that can be done with it? Also what other neat things might I be able to do with CMD to generally screw with my friends heads and so on?

Also what are you able to do with someones IP address if you aquire it?

Mict, shut up, you can do practically anything you want from a command line, launch applications, check connections, develop a connection to your (or someone else) router and control it through commands and from a commans prompt you can access ftp and telnet. There are hundreds of things that can be done from a command prompt. Tell me what you want to do, and i'll/we'll tell you if its possible.

yeah, I often work from the prompt especially for networking tasks / diagnostics, route tracing, sysprep, etc it's definitely NOT just for debugging. Mict, I can see you are a pretty new member and you're obviously keen, so I am not going to flame here, but please don't answer questions unless you know what you are talking about - it just leads to confusion.

T, you can do whatever you want (within reason), all you ned is a command (or a few). If you want to reboot a router, enter the router through telnet and select the reboot option, install hacked firmware on their router etc, this can all be done. Or you can do it graphically through your browser. You can also send messages to people on your network (netsend) and chck out who is on your network (net view).

btw, baph, i made you a festive avatar, <3

well Id like to know more so about this network thing that you mentioned, sending messages to others on the network and everything else, sounds nifty:)

What im mainly looking at is getting having administrator options through it where Im on a non admin profile. Like say it won't allow me to open and install a simple program like MSN Messenger (just an example) due to the admin settings, could I either hack and change the settings or preferably just use cmd as a bypass of admin limitations. If you knows what the hell im talking about, cause Im not sure I even do;)

Let me assume your talking about your school.

Well, you could boot into safe mode and log in as an administrator, or you coudl keylog your admin.

baph, tis not showing up! =O

not much you can do??? Ha...

Star Wars Episode 4 from the command prompt:

1. Open Windows XP and go to Start, then run.
2. Type in or copy "telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl" without the commas.
3. Sit back and watch the ASCII movie :)

I got the following from another forum that I stubled across time ago, they got this from somewhere else as well, so this info has been around:

Very nice, but I notice a lot of the networking commands are missing (netstat, tracert, etc). Here are a few more commands:

I bet - if you are N/W admin, you screw your head up with cmd. -- Sometimes its does.
cmd is very usefull as far as Networking is consern. Allot of utilities like mentions in the previous posts are very helfull to get job done very easily. Actully cmd is not that hard to navigate coz.. almost all the tools or utilities got the help options like ping if just type "ping" at the command prompt you it will show you various option and its useage.

I'm in a firewalls & networks team and work and I can tell you that at least 25% of may day is spent inside the command shell.
